Established in 1890 with nine members, the Board of Trustees is the governing body for Seattle Pacific University (formerly Seattle Seminary and Seattle Pacific College). Originally, all nine members were elected by the Washington Conference of the Free Methodist Church. By 1950, the Board had the authority to elect up to eight members. Burton L. Beegle, (1892-1960) was an ordained minister of the Free Methodist Church of the Washington Conference. He joined the Seattle Pacific College mathematics faculty in 1917. In 1922, he and his family moved to Panama to serve as missionaries, where they remained for four years. He resumed teaching mathematics at SPC in 1926.
